As the Senate Agriculture Committee prepares to mark up the Farm Bill, the American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI) urges lawmakers to advance frozen-inclusive policies that expand access to affordable and nutritious foods, reduce food waste, and maximize the value of taxpayer dollars.
That includes preserving the bipartisan SHOPP Act, which would modernize federal nutrition incentive programs by expanding access to all forms of fruits and vegetables, including frozen options. Today, many federal nutrition incentives disproportionately focus on fresh produce, despite the fact that frozen options play a critical role in delivering affordable, nutritious food year-round. Families deserve the flexibility to choose nutritious foods that fit their budgets, lifestyles, and local availability. The SHOPP Act is a practical, no-cost way to strengthen nutrition programs, improve their effectiveness, and help Americans buy more produce for their dollars.
Frozen foods help ensure more food is eaten and less is discarded due to spoilage. By extending shelf life, frozen foods help nutrition assistance programs stretch limited resources and deliver a stronger return on federal spending.
The Farm Bill is an opportunity to modernize nutrition policy, reduce waste, and improve access to healthy foods for families across the country. We encourage the Committee to move this important provision forward.
