A Digital, Real-Time and AI-Assisted Supply Chain Risk Management System for Enteric Virus Prevention and Control

AFFI expands its suite of food safety resources with EViews, a cutting-edge and innovative early warning risk management system to address enteric virus risks in the global berry supply chain. Developed in collaboration with AFFI partner iDecision Sciences (IDS), this transformative digital platform is designed to help all of the stakeholders (growers, processors, packers, blenders, importers, distributors, brand owners and retailers) in the berry supply chain:

  • Identify food safety breakdowns, assessing water, waste and hygiene risks with dynamic data collection and analysis at farms and processing operations.
  • Mitigate and prevent downstream supply chain issues by implementing targeted mitigation measures. Quantify individual product risk – using AI/ML tools and predictive modeling to manage product lot integrity.
  • Leverage traceability with actionable data for trend and investigative actions to drive continuous improvement.

Background

Contamination of enteric viruses like hepatitis A and norovirus in the global berry supply chain presents significant public health concern. Our industry understands the potential ways in which contamination is likely to occur, whether during harvest or in the processing facility. However, partners across the supply chain need more discerning tools to be able to pinpoint the time and nature of contamination. Virus detection is not only challenging to implement, but also an inadequate tool to manage risk. In frozen berries, any contamination prior to freezing will also persist through frozen storage and product shelf life.

EViews is an Enteric Virus Early Warning System designed to help all global partners prevent contamination of berries with hepatitis A and norovirus in the supply chain.

• Water management: sources of irrigation, types of irrigation, water quality
• Waste management: access to toilet facilities, cleaning protocols, manure treatment, sewage disposal
• Personal health and hygiene: hand washing stations and practices, use of gloves, manual harvesting
